3x3 basketball is a fast and exciting version of the game we know.

It is played by two teams with three players each on the court. Each team also has one substitute player ready to help. Unlike regular basketball, this game uses only a half-court and one basket. The official ball is a special size. It is the size of a women's basketball but has the weight of a men's basketball. This style of play is a great way to bring new people to the sport. FIBA, the group that runs basketball, uses it to promote the game worldwide.

The way the game works is very quick and simple. A single game lasts for only 10 minutes. A team wins immediately if they reach 21 points first. If no one reaches 21 points, the team with the most points wins. Shots made inside the arc are worth one point. Shots made from far away, called "downtown," are worth two points.

If the score is tied, teams play an untimed overtime period. In overtime, the first team to score two points wins the game. This keeps the action moving without any long breaks.

People have played 3x3 in streets and gyms for many years. In the late 2000s, rules began to become official in the United States. Tournaments like Gus Macker helped organize players of all skill levels. A group in Romania called Sport Arena Streetball also hosted events starting in 2005. FIBA began testing official rules in 2007 at the Asian Indoor Games in Macau. The first international debut under FIBA rules was in 2009 in Singapore. These early events helped turn a street game into a global sport.

Today, there are many big competitions for 3x3 players. The FIBA 3x3 World Tour is a major series of tournaments. It includes Masters events and a big Final with large cash prizes. The highest tournaments for national teams are the FIBA 3x3 World Cups. 3x3 even made its debut at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Another huge event is Spokane Hoopfest in Washington, which is the largest 3x3 tournament in the world. Even the NBA has held its own summer series called Dew NBA 3X.

3x3 basketball connects to the world through a special ranking system. Players and national teams earn points at official events to move up the rankings. This system helps find the best teams for the World Cup. It also helps grow the sport all year long. Some leagues, like BIG3, use slightly different rules and different balls. Whether it is played in a professional arena or on a local court, the goal is the same. It brings people together through fast, skillful, and fun play.
