3x3 basketball, often stylized as ƐX3, is a fast-paced variation of traditional basketball.

It is played with three players per side on a half-court setup. This format uses only one backboard and one basket. The sport is currently organized and promoted by FIBA, the global governing body for basketball. 3x3 serves as a major tool for spreading the game to new audiences. It combines high-level skill with an accessible, energetic atmosphere. This version has become so popular that it is now part of the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games.

The mechanics of the game are designed for continuous action. Each team consists of three active players and one substitute. A coin toss determines who starts with the ball or who begins overtime. The game begins when the defensive team passes the ball to the offense. All offensive players must start outside the arc, while defenders start inside. The clock runs for a maximum of 10 minutes. A team wins immediately by scoring 21 points. If no one reaches 21 points, the team with the highest score wins.

Scoring and shot rules differ from full-court basketball. Shots made inside the arc, including free throws, are worth one point. Shots made from "downtown," or outside the arc, are worth two points. After a goal, the non-scoring team takes the ball under the basket. They must dribble or pass it behind the arc to restart play. The offense has only 12 seconds to attempt a shot. There is also a "Trent Tucker Rule" for very late shots. If the clock shows 0.2 seconds or less, a player must use a high lob or tip-in.

Fouls and overtime follow specific regulations. If a game ends in a tie, teams play an untimed overtime period. In this period, the first team to score two points wins. Team fouls are tracked carefully to manage penalties. After nine team fouls, every subsequent foul results in two free throws and possession. Personal fouls during a shot inside the arc earn one free throw. If a player is shooting from behind the arc and misses, they receive two free throws. A player who commits two unsportsmanlike fouls is disqualified from the game.

The history of 3x3 is rooted in street and gym culture. While played informally for years, rules became standardized in the late 2000s. In the United States, series like Gus Macker and Hoop It Up grew the sport. In Romania, Sport Arena Streetball hosted events in Bucharest starting in 2005. FIBA began official testing in 2007 at the Asian Indoor Games in Macau. The international debut under FIBA rules occurred at the 2009 Asian Youth Games in Singapore. Bucharest later became known as the "Mecca of 3x3 basketball" by Sports Illustrated.

Today, the sport features massive professional competitions. The FIBA 3x3 World Tour is the top professional circuit. It includes a series of Masters tournaments and a grand Final. These events offer six-figure prize money in US dollars. The highest level for national teams is the FIBA 3x3 World Cup. The 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo marked the Olympic debut for the sport. Other major events include Spokane Hoopfest in Washington, which is the largest 3x3 tournament in the world. The NBA also hosts the Dew NBA 3X summer series.

3x3 is connected to a unique global ranking system. This system helps grow the sport throughout the entire year. Individual players and national teams earn points at FIBA-endorsed events to climb the rankings. National team entries for the World Cup are based strictly on these official rankings. FIBA uses a digital community and a tool called EventMaker to organize this network. This structure ensures that even local tournaments can connect to the global hierarchy. This organized system turns a street game into a professional worldwide discipline.
