The International Basketball Federation, known as FIBA, is the global governing body for basketball. It is an association of national organizations that manages the sport worldwide. FIBA performs several essential roles to keep the game consistent. It defines the official rules of basketball for all players. It also specifies the required equipment and facilities for matches. Additionally, FIBA organizes major international competitions and regulates how athletes transfer between different countries. The organization also controls the appointment of international referees to ensure fair play.

FIBA operates through a structured system of membership and regional zones. Currently, there are 212 national federations that belong to the association. These members are organized into five distinct zones based on geography. The five zones are Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.

Each zone has a specific number of members. FIBA Africa has 54 members, while FIBA Americas has 42. FIBA Asia contains 44 members, and FIBA Europe has 50. Finally, FIBA Oceania consists of 22 members. When a new national federation is admitted, the Central Board assigns it to a specific zone.

Governance within FIBA is handled by several important bodies. The FIBA Congress is the supreme body of the organization. It is an assembly of representatives from every affiliated national federation. Each federation receives one vote during these meetings. The Congress meets every two years to hold elections or mid-term meetings. It is the only body allowed to change the General Statutes of FIBA. The FIBA Central Board serves as the highest executive body. This board currently comprises 27 members for the 2023-2027 term. It includes the president, the secretary-general, and the treasurer. It also includes 13 elected members, five zone presidents, and representatives from the NBA and the players.

Major international tournaments are a central part of FIBA's mission. The FIBA Basketball World Cup is a premier tournament for men's national teams. This event occurs every four years. Teams compete to win the Naismith Trophy, named for James Naismith, the creator of basketball. Starting in 2019, the men's World Cup moved to the year following the FIFA World Cup. A parallel event, the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup, is also held every four years. FIBA also organizes the Summer Olympics Basketball Tournament in partnership with the International Olympic Committee. They also run Olympic Qualifying Tournaments for both men and women.

FIBA has a long history that began in the early 20th century. The association was founded in Geneva in 1932. This was two years after the Olympics recognized basketball as an official sport. Originally, basketball fell under the International Amateur Handball Federation. The eight founding nations were Argentina, Czechoslovakia, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Portugal, Romania, and Switzerland. In 1934, the Protocol of Stockholm established FIBA as the sole recognized authority for basketball. During the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, FIBA named James Naismith as its Honorary President. Over time, the headquarters moved to Munich in 1956 before returning to Geneva in 2002. In 2013, FIBA moved into its current headquarters in Mies, Switzerland, called "The House of Basketball."

Significant changes have shaped the modern era of international basketball. In April 1989, FIBA members voted to allow NBA players to participate in international events. This vote passed with a margin of 56 to 13. This decision helped FIBA compete with other events like the Goodwill Games. FIBA also maintains the FIBA Hall of Fame, which held its first ceremony in 2007. To track global skill levels, FIBA maintains official world rankings. The men's ranking was updated on September 10, 2023, following the World Cup. The women's ranking was updated on August 21, 2023, after the Continental Cups.

Today, FIBA connects various aspects of the basketball world. It manages competitions for national teams, professional clubs, and even esports. It oversees youth tournaments, such as the U-19 and U-17 World Cups. The organization also manages 3x3 basketball competitions, which include their own World Cups and Olympic events. By setting standards for everything from professional players to digital esports, FIBA ensures that basketball remains a unified global sport.
