FIBA makes sure everyone plays by the same rules. They decide what equipment players need and what courts should look like. They also pick the referees who work at big games. This helps the sport stay organized in every country. Because of this, players from different lands can compete fairly against each other.

Running these big games is a huge job with many steps. FIBA organizes the men's and women's FIBA Basketball World Cups. They also work with the International Olympic Committee for the Summer Olympics.

The men's World Cup happens every four years. Teams play very hard to win the Naismith Trophy. This special prize is named after James Naismith, the man who created basketball. For women, the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup is also held every four years.

This group has a long history that started a long time ago. FIBA was founded in Geneva in 1932. This was just two years after the Olympics officially recognized basketball. At first, it had a different name. Eight nations were the first members, including Argentina, Italy, and Switzerland. In 1934, a rule called the Protocol of Stockholm made FIBA the main authority for the sport. During the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, they named James Naismith as their Honorary President.

Today, FIBA is very large and reaches almost every corner of the globe. There are 212 national federations that are members. These members are organized into five zones: Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.

For example, FIBA Africa has 54 members, while FIBA Oceania has 22. The group has moved its headquarters several times. It was in Munich for a while, but it is now in Mies, Switzerland. This home is called the House of Basketball.

FIBA connects the sport to many different people and places. They even have a Hall of Fame to honor great players. In 1989, they made a big change to allow NBA players to play in international games. This helped bring even more talent to the World Cup and the Olympics. They also keep track of how well teams are doing with world rankings. This way, everyone can see which teams are the best in the world right now.
