Naismith wanted a game that was safe and fair. He studied many sports like rugby and baseball. He chose a soft soccer ball to prevent injuries. He also decided that players could not run with the ball. This rule was meant to stop players from tackling each other. He wanted a clean sport where everyone had a chance.

To make the game, Naismith needed a goal. He asked a janitor for two boxes. Instead, the janitor brought him two peach baskets. Naismith nailed these baskets to a high railing.

He wrote down 13 basic rules for the game. He called it "Basket Ball." The first game was played in December 1891. It was different from the game we see today. There were nine players on each team. They did not dribble the ball. Instead, they had to pass it to move it up the court. After every goal, they used a jump ball to start again.

Naismith's life was full of new beginnings. He earned a medical degree in Denver in 1898. After that, he moved to the University of Kansas. He started their basketball program that same year.
