Instead of using a cable or a satellite dish, it uses the internet. This is often called over-the-top media, or OTT. You can watch shows through a paid subscription. Some services are free but show ads.

A typical show might last 30 to 60 minutes. A movie usually lasts between 90 and 120 minutes. This technology has changed how the whole world watches stories.

How does it work? It relies on a way to send data through the internet. In the past, digital signals were too huge for telephone wires. They needed a lot of space called bandwidth. Two big changes made streaming possible. First, video compression makes large video files much smaller. Second, new ways to send data called ADSL helped.

Now, data travels in small pieces called packets. This allows video to move smoothly to your screen.

People have been working on this for a long time. In 1995, ESPN streamed a baseball game between the Seattle Mariners and the New York Yankees. This was the first worldwide live-streaming event. Later, in 2003, Angelos Diamantoulakis launched TVonline. This was the first station to broadcast only over the internet. In 2005, YouTube launched to let people share videos.

Many famous companies joined the streaming race. Netflix began as a DVD rental site but started streaming in 2007.
