They send their files to a hosting company like SoundCloud or Libsyn. These companies put the files into directories and streaming services. You use a podcast client, which is a special app on your device. This app checks for new files and downloads them automatically. This way, it feels like the show is being pushed to you.

The word "podcast" has a very interesting history. It is a portmanteau, which is a word made by joining two others. It combines "iPod" and "broadcast" to create a new name. The term was first used by journalist Ben Hammersley in early 2004. Later, Danny Gregoire and Adam Curry helped the name spread. Even though it mentions the iPod, you can use any computer.

Podcasting has grown into a massive industry over the years. In 2004, Adam Curry launched his show called Daily Source Code. Later, The Ricky Gervais Show became a huge hit with many downloads. By 2007, podcasts were doing what radio had done for decades. In early 2019, Edison Research estimated 90 million people in the U.S. listened to podcasts. There are now over three million different podcasts available to listeners.

Podcasts are easy for anyone to start making. You only need a microphone, a computer, and some software. Many people listen while they are commuting in cars or trains. Because they are often free, they are called a disruptive medium. This means they change how we think about traditional radio. Some creators also use crowdfunding to get help from their fans.
