Digital media is a way of sharing information using machines. This information can be text, sounds, pictures, or videos.

It works by using digits, which are a series of numbers. Most digital media uses binary code. Binary is a system of ones and zeroes. These digits combine to make many different things.

You can see or hear digital media on electronic devices. This includes things like computers, tablets, and smartphones. Digital media is different from analog media. Analog media includes things like printed books or old video tapes.

How does this digital way of working actually happen? It starts with machine-readable data formats. These formats allow devices to create and store information. You can view, change, or even listen to this data.

Digital computers make this possible using binary and logic. This allows one machine to do many different tasks. For example, a single computer can play music and show movies. The machines use these ones and zeroes to process everything. This makes it easy to send data over the internet. This data travels to your device to be used.

People have been thinking about these ideas for a long time. In the early 1800s, Charles Babbage imagined machine codes. He designed machines to help solve math errors.

Between 1822 and 1823, Ada Lovelace wrote the first instructions for his engines. These instructions are now seen as the first computer program. Later, in 1945, Vannevar Bush wrote an essay called "As We May Think." He imagined a device called a "memex." This device would help people store and link information together. His ideas helped lead to the creation of the World Wide Web.

Digital media has changed the world very quickly. In 1986, less than 1% of media storage was digital. By 2007, that number grew to 94%.

This shift is part of the Information Age. We are also seeing the rise of mobile devices. Martin Cooper made the first mobile phone call in 1973.

Later, companies like Nokia and Motorola released phones for everyone. In 2016, about 88% of smartphones used Android. Digital media platforms like YouTube saw 27.9 billion hours of viewing in 2020.

Today, digital media is part of almost everything we do. It is used in schools, jobs, and for fun.

Some companies use a special business model to make money. They provide free entertainment to keep people engaged. Then, they use data to show ads to users.

There are also different ways to share media. You can pay for ads, or you can own your own website. You can even "earn" media when people share your work for free. This happens when things go viral online. This makes digital media a huge part of our culture.
