Straight razor

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A straight razor is a tool used for shaving hair.

It is also known as an open razor or a cut-throat razor. The blade can fold into a handle when you are not using it. These handles are actually protectors called scales. They keep the sharp edge from getting damaged. They also stop people from getting accidental cuts.

This simple design has been around for a very long time. It is a tool that requires a lot of skill to use well.

To understand how it works, look at the different parts of the blade. The narrow part of the blade rotates on a pin called the pivot. The curved top part of the blade is the spine. The sharp part opposite the spine is the cutting edge.

You can use a part called the tang to help lift the blade. The tang is the narrow metal end beyond the pivot. You can also rest your fingers on the tang to keep the razor steady. This helps you control the blade while you shave.

People have used different tools to shave throughout history. In prehistoric times, people used sharpened flint, shark's teeth, or clam shells.

Ancient Egyptian tombs even contained razors made of solid gold and copper. In the 6th century BC, a king named Lucius Tarquinius Priscus introduced razors to ancient Rome. Later, in 1680, the first steel-edged folding razors were made in Sheffield, England.

These were called "Sheffield wares" and were sent as far as Finland and Russia.

Many important changes happened to how these razors were made. Around 1740, a man named Benjamin Huntsman invented a new way to make cast steel. This helped him create blades with a hollow-ground shape. A hollow grind means the blade is curved inward.

This makes the edge more delicate and allows for a closer shave. While safety razors became popular in the late 19th century, straight razors remained common for over two hundred years. Even today, some people prefer them because they are sustainable.

Today, you can find straight razors made in North America, Asia, and Europe. Using one is different from using a modern electric razor. A study by Dutch researchers found that straight razors shave hair about 0.002 inches shorter than electric ones.

You must learn how to hone the blade to keep it sharp. Honing is the process of sharpening the edge. You also use a strop to prepare the blade for shaving. Because they take practice, many barber colleges used to teach people how to use them.
