He was born on January 5, 1855, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. He is best known for inventing a popular safety razor. His invention changed how men shaved every single day. Before his idea, men used straight razors. These blades were difficult to use because they needed sharpening every day with a leather strop. Gillette wanted to create a better way to shave.

His idea was to make a thin, cheap blade made of stamped steel. This blade could be thrown away once it became dull. This way, the user would not have to sharpen it anymore. Making these blades was a very hard job. The steel had to be thin and easy to work with. A machinist named Steven Porter used Gillette's drawings to make the first working blade.

A partner named William Emery Nickerson also helped a lot. He improved the handle and made machines to mass-produce the blades.

Gillette started his company, the American Safety Razor Company, in 1901. He changed the name to the Gillette Safety Razor Company in 1902. In 1903, the company sold only 51 razors and 168 blades. However, things grew very fast after that. By the second year, they sold 90,884 razors. By 1915, the company sold 450,000 razors and over 70 million blades.

During World War I in 1917, the company even provided razors to all American soldiers.

Many people around the world recognized Gillette's face. He put his portrait and signature on the razor packaging. In some countries, people even called the blades "the kind with the Man's Face." This helped make his brand very famous. Gillette also had many different interests in life. He wrote books about how he thought society should work. He even offered the presidency of his company to Theodore Roosevelt. He died on July 9, 1932, in Los Angeles, California.

Today, the Gillette brand is still very well known. It is now part of a large company called Procter & Gamble. Gillette also owned a large ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains. This place is now called the King Gillette Ranch. It is a public park that people can visit today.
