Safety razor

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A safety razor is a tool used for shaving hair. It is special because it has a protective device. This device sits between the sharp blade and your skin. The main goal was to make shaving safer for everyone. Before these tools, people needed professional barbers to help them. A guard helped people shave without getting hurt.

These razors work by using a guard to control the blade. Some early guards had teeth that looked like a comb. These teeth let the hair pass through easily. However, the teeth were strong enough to stop the blade from touching the skin. This way, the razor could cut the hair without causing a cut. Some designs even used a metal holder to keep the blade at a specific angle. This helped the razor glide smoothly over the face.

People have been working on these designs for a long time. A French man named Jean-Jacques Perret made a guard razor around 1762. In 1847, William S. Henson described a razor that looked like a hoe. Later, in 1880, Frederic and Otto Kampfe filed a patent for the term "safety razor." They made razors under the name Star Safety Razor. These inventors helped change how people groomed themselves at home.

Many famous names helped make razors popular in the 1900s. King Camp Gillette invented a famous double-edge razor. This razor used a blade with two sharp edges. It was very helpful during the First World War. The U.S. Army gave Gillette kits to its soldiers. They delivered 3.5 million razors and 32 million blades to the troops.

This helped many men start a new shaving habit.

Today, we see many different kinds of razors in stores. In the 1960s, blades changed from carbon steel to stainless steel. This new metal does not rust as quickly.

Since the 1970s, many people use cartridge razors. These have blades tucked inside plastic pieces. Some modern razors even have many blades in one small head. In 2010, almost one billion men were still using double-edge razors.
