A Swiss Army knife is a very useful tool that carries many functions in one small object.

Most people know them by their bright red handles and the white Swiss cross logo. These knives are famous all over the world because they are so versatile. They are not just single blades, but collections of many different tools. You might find a knife that has a small blade, a screwdriver, or even scissors. This makes them great for many different jobs in daily life.

The way these knives work is quite clever and relies on a pivot point mechanism.

This mechanism allows the various tools to fold neatly inside the handle. When you need a tool, you swing it out from the handle. When you are finished, you fold it back into its place. This design keeps the tools safe and prevents them from poking you. The tools are held together tightly by small metal pins called rivets.

The history of these knives began when the Swiss Army needed help.

In the late 1880s, soldiers needed tools to open food cans. They also needed a screwdriver to maintain their Schmidt–Rubin rifles. In 1891, the first official model was called Modell 1890. At first, a German company called Wester & Co. made the first 15,000 knives. Later, Swiss makers like Karl Elsener began making them in Switzerland. Elsener eventually created an improved version for officers in 1897.

Some versions are very small, while others are quite large. For example, a knife called "The Giant" by Wenger had 87 tools. It was even recognized by Guinness World Records for having so many functions.

Another massive knife made in 1991 had 314 blades! Most common knives use stainless steel for the blades. This special metal is strong and resists rust very well.

You can think of a Swiss Army knife like a tiny toolbox that fits in your pocket.

Just as a toolbox holds a hammer, a saw, and a wrench, this knife holds many items at once. Some modern versions even include high-tech tools like LED lights or USB flash drives. While the tools have changed over time, the main goal is still the same. They provide many solutions to small problems in one compact package. This makes them a lasting icon of Swiss culture.
