Steely Dan is a famous American rock band known for very careful music.

The group was started by two friends, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. They met in 1967 at Bard College in New York. Fagen heard Becker practicing his electric guitar outside a café. He thought the playing sounded very professional and modern. The two men soon began writing songs together in various local groups. They even played with a young man named Chevy Chase. This early time helped them find their unique musical voice.

Making their music was a very detailed way of working. In the beginning, they had a full band that played live shows. By the end of 1974, Becker and Fagen changed their plan. They decided to stop touring and work only in the studio. They used a revolving cast of talented session musicians to play instruments. These musicians were experts who could play many different styles. Sometimes, the duo asked players to record forty different takes of one part. They wanted every single note to sound absolutely perfect.

Their musical style was a mix of many different sounds. They blended rock with jazz, Latin music, R&B, and the blues. Their first album, Can't Buy a Thrill, came out in 1972. It included hit songs like "Do It Again" and "Reelin' In the Years." Later, they released the album Aja in 1977, which was their top seller. The band's lyrics were often mysterious and full of irony. This special way of mixing sounds and words made them very famous.

Steely Dan had a long and busy history with many changes.

After they stopped touring, many original members like Jeff "Skunk" Baxter left. Becker and Fagen continued as a duo in the recording studio. They worked on many albums through the 1970s and 1980s. The band eventually broke up in 1981, but fans stayed very loyal. They reunited in 1993 and began touring the world again. In 2000, their album Two Against Nature won a Grammy Award.

Today, we can see how much people value their work. Steely Dan has sold more than 40 million records all over the world. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. In 2010, VH1 ranked them at number 82 on a list of great artists. Rolling Stone even called them one of the best duos of all time. Even after Walter Becker passed away in 2017, the music lives on. Donald Fagen has continued the group as its sole official member.
