Making their music involves many talented people playing different parts. The original group had seven members working together. Robert Lamm played keyboards and sang. Peter Cetera played the bass and sang too. Terry Kath played the guitar and sang as well. Other members played the trumpet, trombone, and woodwinds. Danny Seraphine kept the beat on the drums. In 1974, Laudir de Oliveira joined to play percussion. This mix of voices and instruments created their special sound.

The band's story began in February 1967.

A group of musicians met to start a new project. At first, they called themselves The Big Thing. They played popular hits in Chicago nightclubs. Later, they moved to Los Angeles and changed their name. They became the Chicago Transit Authority in 1968. Finally, they shortened the name to Chicago in 1969. They did this to avoid legal trouble with a transit company.

Chicago achieved many big milestones during their career. In 1971, they were the first rock band to sell out Carnegie Hall for a full week.
