They describe their sound as rock and roll with horns. This unique style blends rock with jazz, classical, R&B, and pop music. The band is one of the world's best-selling musical groups. They have sold more than 100 million records globally.

Their influence is seen in their innovative marketing and chart success.

Creating the Chicago sound requires many different musical roles. The original lineup featured seven core members. Robert Lamm played keyboards and provided lead vocals. Peter Cetera played the bass guitar and also sang. Terry Kath played the guitar and shared lead vocal duties. The horn section included Lee Loughnane on trumpet and James Pankow on trombone. Walter Parazaider played woodwinds, while Danny Seraphine played the drums. In 1974, Laudir de Oliveira joined as a percussionist and second drummer.

The band's evolution involved several name changes and transitions. They began as a group called The Big Thing in 1967. They played popular hits in Chicago nightclubs during this time. In 1968, they moved to Los Angeles and became the Chicago Transit Authority.

They eventually shortened the name to Chicago in 1969. This change helped them avoid legal issues with the local mass-transit company. Over the years, the lineup changed as members like Terry Kath and Peter Cetera left. However, Lamm, Loughnane, and Pankow remained constant members for many years.

Chicago's early career was marked by rapid growth and massive sales. Their first album, Chicago Transit Authority, was a double album. This was a rare choice for a debut studio release in 1969. The album reached number 17 on the Billboard 200. It sold over one million copies by 1970 and earned a platinum certification.

The group was even nominated for a Grammy for Best New Artist. They were also scheduled to play Woodstock in 1969, but a promoter rescheduled them. Instead, they performed at the Fillmore West and later at Tanglewood.

In the 1970s, the band established a very specific way of releasing music. They often released double albums, such as Chicago II and Chicago III. They used Roman numerals to name their albums in a sequence. This helped fans follow their musical history. For example, Chicago II featured the 13-minute suite "Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon." In 1971, they released a quadruple LP titled Chicago at Carnegie Hall.

This live album recorded a week-long run of sold-out shows. It was the first time a rock act sold out Carnegie Hall for a full week.

The band's commercial success is supported by impressive statistics. In the United States, they have sold over 40 million units. Their catalog includes 23 gold, 18 platinum, and eight multi-platinum albums. In 1974, they achieved the rare feat of having seven albums on the Billboard 200 at once. Billboard ranked them as the ninth greatest artist for album success in 2015. They also ranked thirteenth for success on the Hot 100 singles chart in 2008.

Chicago's legacy is recognized by many major music institutions. They have won one Grammy Award for the song "If You Leave Me Now." Their first album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2014. The original members were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. Additionally, several members were elected to the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2017. They also received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.
