It was started by two friends, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. They met at Bard College in New York. Fagen heard Becker playing guitar and asked him to join a band. They loved making music together.

In the 1970s, the group moved to Los Angeles. Their music mixed many styles. It used rock, jazz, and even Latin music. They wanted their songs to sound perfect. To do this, they worked in a studio. They used many talented session musicians to help them. These musicians were experts at playing different instruments.

By the end of 1974, the duo stopped touring. They only wanted to record music in the studio. Their album Aja was very popular in 1977. They even won a Grammy Award later in 2000.
