Solifuges are a unique group of arachnids. You might know them by names like sun spiders, camel spiders, or wind scorpions.

Their scientific name, Solifugae, comes from Latin words meaning "those that flee from the sun." This name describes how they often avoid bright light. While they look like other creatures, they are not true spiders. They do not have silk or spinnerets to make webs. They are also not scorpions because they do not have a tail.

These animals have a body made of two main parts. The front part is called the prosoma, which holds the head and legs. The back part is the opisthosoma, or abdomen.

The abdomen is very flexible because it has stretchy skin between its segments. This allows the animal to stretch its body to eat a huge amount of food at once. Their mouthparts, called chelicerae, are very large and strong. These jaws work like powerful pincers, similar to a crab. They can even cut through thin bones or feathers.

Solifuges use many senses to find their next meal. They have two large central eyes called median ocelli. These eyes help them see well in the front. They also have tiny lateral eyes on the sides of their heads.

To find food, they also use long, hair-like bristles. They can feel vibrations in the ground around them. They even use special organs on their legs called malleoli to smell. These fan-shaped organs help them sense chemicals in their environment.

Most solifuges live in dry, warm places. You can find them in deserts and grasslands across Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

They are not found in Australia or Madagascar. Some species like to stay in one place in underground burrows. Other species are very active on the surface. They hunt by stalking, chasing, or ambushing their prey. Most solifuges are carnivores that eat insects and other small animals. They are very hungry eaters. Some females eat so much that they cannot walk for a while.

To understand a solifuge, think about how you use your hands. They have five pairs of leg-like parts, but only four are true legs. The first pair are called pedipalps. These act like a mix of arms and antennae. They use them to feel obstacles and grab prey. The tips of these pedipalps even have tiny suction cups. They use these cups to drink water or climb smooth surfaces. This helps them survive in harsh, dry lands where water is hard to find.
