Arachnids are a huge group of living things.

They belong to a larger group called arthropods. This group includes spiders, scorpions, ticks, and mites. There are more than 110,000 named species in this group. Spiders are a very large part of it, with 51,000 species. Most arachnids live on land. Some live in fresh water or the sea.

You can tell them apart from insects easily. Insects have six legs, but adult arachnids have eight. Arachnids also lack wings and antennae.

An arachnid's body has two main parts. These parts are called the cephalothorax and the abdomen.

The cephalothorax is usually covered by a hard shell called a carapace. The abdomen holds important organs like the heart. Many arachnids use special parts to eat and defend themselves. They have chelicerae for feeding and defense. They also have pedipalps, which are extra appendages. In scorpions, these look like pinchers. In other species, they help with moving or sensing.

Feeding is a very interesting thing that happens.

Most arachnids are carnivores that eat small animals. They often use venom to kill their prey. They also use enzymes to break food down. These juices turn the prey into a liquid broth. The arachnid then sucks this liquid into its mouth. A muscular part called a pharynx acts like a pump. This pump moves the food into the stomach.

Arachnids have many ways to sense the world. They have different types of eyes called ocelli. Most have lateral ocelli on the sides. Some, like scorpions, can have up to five pairs. They also have fine sensory hairs on their bodies. These hairs help them feel things through touch. Some have even more complex hairs called trichobothria.

They may also have slit sense organs. These help them sense motion or even hear.

Learning about these creatures connects to many things. You might see a spider web in your garden. You might see a tick on a pet. Their history is even found in old stories. The name comes from a Greek myth. It tells of a weaver named Arachne. She was turned into a spider by the gods.

This shows how humans have wondered about them for a long time.
