The abdomen is made of ten segments called tergites and sternites. Large membranes between these segments allow the abdomen to stretch. This flexibility helps them consume very large amounts of food at once.

Solifuges have specialized organs to help them see and breathe. They possess a pair of large central eyes called median ocelli. These eyes have a pigment-cup structure and a domed outer lens. Below the lens sits the retina, which contains light-sensitive cells called rhabdomeres.

They also have vestigial lateral ocelli located in pits near the mouth. For breathing, they use a tracheal system instead of book lungs. They inhale air through several openings called spiracles. These openings are located on the abdomen and between the legs. They use a method called discontinuous gas exchange, similar to insects. This involves periods where the spiracles are closed and periods when they are open.

One of the most striking features of a solifuge is its chelicerae. These are the large, powerful jaws located on the prosoma. Each chelicera has two segments that act like a pincer.
