Tarantulas are a group of large, often hairy spiders.

They belong to a family called Theraphosidae. There are more than one thousand species of these spiders. Many people keep some species as exotic pets. Some New World tarantulas have special hairs called urticating hairs. These hairs can cause skin irritation or eye damage.

These spiders are very important parts of many different lands.

A tarantula has a body with two main parts. The first part is the prosoma, or cephalothorax. The second part is the opisthosoma, or abdomen. A thin waist called a pedicel connects them.

This waist lets the abdomen move in many ways. All tarantulas have an exoskeleton for support. They also have two book lungs to help them breathe. Most spiders only have one book lung. Tarantulas use their eight legs to walk. They move their first and third legs together. They also move their second and fourth legs together.

Finding a tarantula is easy if you know what to look for. They have fangs that face downwards. This is different from true spiders, whose fangs face each other.

Most tarantulas in the Americas have very noticeable hairs. They also do not use webs to hunt. Instead, they use silk for building or as tripwires. Many species live in burrows in the ground. Some species live in trees and make tube tents. They eat large insects, centipedes, and even small mice.

Many different kinds of tarantulas live in many places. The Goliath birdeater lives in Venezuela and Brazil.

This spider can weigh over 6 ounces. It can have a leg span of 12 inches. Its fangs can reach 1.12 inches long. The pinkfoot goliath was described 187 years after the birdeater. Other species live in the United States and Mexico. You can find them in Africa and Asia too. Some spiders in Europe live in Spain and Turkey. They live in many places like deserts and rainforests.

Learning about tarantulas helps us see how they fit into the world. They are part of a large group called Mygalomorphae.

Some people confuse them with wolf spiders. The name tarantula actually came from a wolf spider. That spider lived in a town called Taranto in Italy. Even though they are not related, the name moved to tarantulas. Many tarantula names use the word pelma. This word often refers to the wide footsole of the spider.
