Solifuges are unique arachnids. You might know them as sun spiders or camel spiders. Their name means "those that flee from the sun."

Most live in dry deserts. They are not true spiders. They do not make silk or webs. They are also not scorpions.

These animals have very large jaws called chelicerae. These jaws work like powerful pincers. They can even cut through small bones.

Solifuges have two big eyes in the center of their heads. They also have tiny eyes on the sides. These help them see movement.

Solifuges have five pairs of leg-like parts. The first pair are pedipalps. These act like arms or feelers. They use them to sense things and grab food. They also have suction cups on these parts to drink water. Most solifuges are carnivores. They eat insects, spiders, and even small lizards. They are very hungry eaters! Some females eat so much they cannot walk for a while.
