Snapchat is a popular social media app used for instant messaging.

It is mostly used to send photos and short videos. These messages are called "snaps." A key part of the app is that snaps usually disappear. They are only available for a short time before they are gone. This helps people share real moments without feeling pressure. Users do not have to worry about looking perfect every time. This makes communicating feel more like a real conversation.

There are many ways to use the app. Users can send snaps privately to specific friends. They can also post to a "Story" to show their day. Some content is shown on a public page called "Our Story." People can add text, drawings, or fun filters to their snaps. The app also uses augmented reality to add digital objects to the real world. For extra privacy, users can save photos in a locked area. This area is called "My Eyes Only" and requires a PIN.

Three students from Stanford University created the app. Their names are Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown. They first launched the app as "Picaboo" on July 8, 2011. It was originally for the iOS operating system. The team later changed the name to Snapchat in September 2011. They kept a mascot named "Ghostface Chillah" from the original idea. In 2014, Reggie Brown settled a legal dispute with the other founders. He was officially credited as one of the original authors.
