Pinterest is a digital service used to discover and publish information.

It works as a visual way to find inspiration. People use it to look for recipes, home styles, and fashion ideas. Instead of just reading text, users look at images to find what they like. The creators call it a "catalogue of ideas." This helps people find things they want to try in real life. It is often described as a visual search engine because it focuses on pictures.

The way the site works relies on two main things called pins and boards. A pin is an image that connects to a website. Users can collect these pins into themed groups called boards.

If you see a pin you like on someone else's board, you can save it to your own. This act is called repinning. Users can also follow other people or specific boards to see new ideas in their home feed. In 2016, the site changed the "Pin it" button to a "Save" button to make it easier to use. This helps users build their own collections of interests.

The story of Pinterest began with an app called Tote. Ben Silbermann and Paul Sciarra created Tote to act like a digital paper catalog.

Tote had a hard job because mobile payment technology was not very advanced then. It was difficult for people to buy things easily while using the app. However, users still loved making large collections of items to share. Silbermann saw this behavior and decided to build Pinterest instead. Development began in December 2009, and a prototype launched in March 2010.

Pinterest grew very quickly after its launch. In 2011, the site was named one of the "50 Best Websites" by Time magazine. By December of that year, it was a top 10 social network with 11 million weekly visits.

In 2012, the site had 11.7 million unique visitors in the United States. The company eventually went public on April 18, 2019. On that day, the stock price started at $19 per share. By the end of that day, it closed at $24.40 per share. The company's value reached $12 billion at that time.

Today, Pinterest connects people to shopping and new technology. Businesses use the platform to create virtual storefronts. They can use "Product Pins" to show what they sell to customers.

The site also uses artificial intelligence for visual search. Tools like Pinterest Lens allow users to search for things using a photo. This helps people find similar items in the database quickly. The platform also offers safety settings for users aged 16 and under. This includes making teen accounts private by default to keep their activity hidden from the public.
