It was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. They first released a testing version called Burbn Beta on October 6, 2010. It was meant for testing, but 25,000 people signed up that day. Six days later, they released the official version under the name Instagram. The name is a mix of the words "instant camera" and "telegram." The app grew very fast after this change.

Instagram reached one million users in just two months. It reached ten million users within one year. By June 2018, the app had one billion users.

In April 2012, Facebook bought the service for about $1 billion in cash and stock. The Android version of the app arrived in April 2012. Later, other versions came out for Windows 10 and iPadOS. The app now supports 33 different languages, including English, Hindi, and Spanish.

While many people enjoy the app, there are also some serious concerns. Some people criticize how the app might affect the mental health of teenagers. They worry about how users feel about themselves. There have also been concerns about inappropriate content and how the app handles censorship. To help, Instagram tested removing public "like" counts in some places. This was meant to help people focus more on connecting with others.
