WhatsApp is a very popular way to talk on phones. It is an app used for instant messaging, which means sending text quickly.

You can also use it for Voice over IP, or VoIP. This is a way to make voice and video calls using the internet. People use it to send voice notes and video messages too. They can also share photos, documents, and even their location. To use it, you must register with a mobile phone number. It is now the most used messenger app in the world.

How the app works has changed over time. At first, it was just for showing a person's status. This told friends if someone was at work or on a call. Then, Apple launched push technology. This allowed the app to send alerts even when it was not open. Users started using these alerts to send quick messages to each other. This turned the status app into a messaging tool. Soon, the app could also send photos and make calls.

Two men named Brian Acton and Jan Koum started WhatsApp. They both used to work at a company called Yahoo. Jan Koum bought an iPhone in early 2009. He and Acton decided to build an app for it. They talked about ideas at the home of a friend named Alex Fishman. They even worked with a developer named Igor Solomennikov. The name WhatsApp was chosen to sound like "what's up." The app first appeared on the Apple App Store in May 2009.

WhatsApp has grown into a huge business. In February 2014, Facebook bought WhatsApp for about $19.3 billion. This was a very large amount of money. Facebook is now called Meta Platforms. By 2015, the app had 900 million users. In February 2020, it had more than 2 billion users. By May 2025, it reached 3 billion monthly active users. There is also a version called WhatsApp Business. In 2023, this business app had about 200 million users.

Today, WhatsApp is a main way people talk on the internet. It is used a lot in the Americas and the Indian subcontinent. It is also very common in Europe and Africa. The app helps people find information during big events. For example, it worked with the World Health Organization in 2020. This helped people get facts about the COVID-19 pandemic. In India, people can even use it to shop for groceries. It connects people to many different parts of their daily lives.
