Users can do many things on the platform. They can invite others to become connections. You can also join groups or write articles. People can post photos and videos to share ideas. LinkedIn even helps people organize events in the real world. Some people use it to find freelance work through a feature called Open for Business. In 2024, they even began testing a new AI assistant for paid users. This helps people use the site more easily.

Reid Hoffman and Eric Ly started LinkedIn in 2003. They had help from many people who worked at PayPal. In the early years, many companies gave them money to grow. This money is called venture capital. By 2006, the company was making a profit. In 2007, the site reached 10 million users. This growth helped them open offices in places like India and Australia. They also opened an international headquarters in Dublin, Ireland.

LinkedIn has grown into a very large business. In 2016, Microsoft bought LinkedIn for $26.2 billion. This was the largest purchase Microsoft had made at that time. Today, the company is led by CEO Ryan Roslansky. There are about 18,500 employees working there. They have 36 offices around the world. One big office is a 26-story building in San Francisco.

Most of the money the company makes comes from selling information to recruiters and advertising.

Using a big network like this can sometimes bring hard jobs. Some people have criticized how the site handles information. There have been problems with security in the past. In 2012, some user data was stolen online. In 2016, many usernames and passwords were offered for sale. Some countries have also put rules or bans on the site. For example, Russia banned it in 2016. China also stopped using LinkedIn in 2021. Even with these challenges, the site remains a major part of how the world works.
