Skype was a famous way to talk to people using the internet.

It was a tool for video calls and voice calls. People also used it for instant messaging and sending files. It worked on many things like computers and mobile phones. It even worked on video game consoles. This made it easy for people to stay connected from anywhere. Skype was a very important part of how people used technology to communicate.

To make these calls work, Skype used a special way to connect people. At first, it used a peer-to-peer system. This means the software used a network of users to help the system work. Later, in May 2012, it moved to using supernodes run by Microsoft. By 2017, it changed again to a centralized service. This new system was based on Azure, which is a cloud service. This change helped the app manage messages and files in a new way.

Skype was started by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis in 2003. Zennström was from Sweden and Friis was from Denmark. They worked with four developers from Estonia named Ahti Heinla, Priit Kasesalu, Jaan Tallinn, and Toivo Annus. They wanted to find a way to make voice calls cost less. The first public beta version came out on August 29, 2003. The name Skype came from the words "sky" and "peer-to-peer." They originally thought of the name Skyper, but that name was already taken.

Many big companies owned Skype over the years. eBay bought it in September 2005 for about $2.6 billion. In 2009, a group including Silver Lake and Andreessen Horowitz bought part of it for $1.9 billion. Then, Microsoft bought Skype in May 2011 for $8.5 billion.

Microsoft used it to replace Windows Live Messenger. In February 2023, the app was still very popular. About 36 million people used it every single day.

Skype had many fun features that people enjoyed using. It had Mojis, which were short video clips and GIFs used in chats. Users could even use AI to blur their backgrounds during video calls. It also let people send money through the app using PayPal. In 2019, it was one of the most downloaded mobile apps of the decade. However, Microsoft decided to retire the service on May 5, 2025. Most people now use Microsoft Teams instead of Skype.
