It is a web mapping platform that helps people find their way. People use it to see street maps and photos from high above. It can show satellite imagery and 360-degree views of streets through Street View. This tool is very helpful for planning trips and seeing where things are. Many people around the world rely on it every single month.

This service works in many different ways to help travelers. It provides a route planner for walking, biking, or driving a car. You can also use it to find paths for public transportation. The app shows real-time traffic conditions to see if roads are busy.

It started as a computer program made by Lars and Jens Rasmussen. They worked with Stephen Ma and Noel Gordon at a company called Where 2 Technologies. In October 2004, Google bought their company. Google then turned the program into a web application. They also bought other companies to add more features. One company helped with traffic data, and another helped with seeing data visually. The official Google Maps service launched in February 2005.

Google Maps has grown into a huge part of our digital lives. By 2013, it was the most popular smartphone app in the world. Over 54% of all smartphone owners used it by that time. In 2017, reports showed two billion people used it on Android devices.

The maps use many kinds of pictures to show the Earth. Some photos are taken from planes flying over cities. Other pictures come from satellites in space. Much of this satellite imagery is updated every three years.

Today, Google Maps connects to many things you might already use. It works with other Google services like YouTube, Gmail, and Search.
