It launched on August 1, 2003, and grew to be a global leader. For a few years, it was the largest social networking site in the world. It helped many new companies find success, including YouTube and Zynga. Myspace also had a huge impact on pop culture and the music industry. It was a place where people could connect in ways they never had before.

The way the site worked allowed for a lot of creativity. Users could customize the look and feel of their own pages. They could change backgrounds to make their profiles unique. This made communicating much easier than using old tools like Instant Messaging. People used the site to message friends and share interests. It was especially popular with teenagers and young adults. Because it was easy to use, it grew very quickly across the globe.

Many people worked hard to build and grow the platform. A group of employees from a company called eUniverse saw the potential in social networking. They built the first version of MySpace in just ten days. Leaders like Chris DeWolfe and Tom Anderson helped run the company. They used a tool called ColdFusion to build the software. This allowed them to develop the site much faster than their competitors. The project was overseen by Brad Greenspan, the founder of eUniverse.

Myspace reached incredible heights during its peak years. In July 2005, News Corporation bought the site for $580 million. By June 2006, it was the most visited website in the United States. The site even signed a massive advertising deal with Google worth $900 million. In April 2008, Myspace had about 115 million monthly visitors. At that same time, the new site Facebook had a similar number of visitors. By May 2009, Facebook had officially overtaken Myspace in the United States.

Several things led to the decline of the site's popularity. Some experts say the site had too many advertisements. These ads made the pages slow and harder to use. While Facebook was making a clean and simple design, Myspace struggled with technical issues. The site also had problems with spam and unwanted messages. These issues made it less inviting for many users. Even though it changed many times, the number of users dropped steadily. Today, it remains a very important part of internet history.
