It serves as a digital space for professional networking and career development. Jobseekers use the platform to post their CVs, which are documents summarizing their work history. Meanwhile, employers use the site to post job listings to find new workers. As of 2026, the platform has more than 1.2 billion registered members. These members are spread across over 200 different countries and territories.

The platform functions through a system of connections and professional interactions. Users can invite others to become connections, even if those people are not already members. Once connected, users can organize offline events or join specific professional groups. The service also allows members to write articles and post photos or videos. To help freelancers, LinkedIn launched a global feature called Open for Business in 2019. More recently, in June 2024, the company began testing an AI assistant for its Premium users.

LinkedIn's business model relies heavily on professional data and advertising. Since 2015, most of the company's revenue has come from selling access to member information. This information is sold to recruiters and sales professionals looking for specific talent. Additionally, the company operates LinkedIn Ads, which is a portal for companies to advertise on the platform. This advertising is very popular in the business world. In fact, 94% of business-to-business marketers have used LinkedIn to distribute content since 2017.

The history of LinkedIn began in late 2002. It was founded by Reid Hoffman and a team of former PayPal employees. This founding team included Eric Ly, Allen Blue, and several others. The company received significant financing from venture capital firms like Sequoia Capital. LinkedIn reached its first month of profitability in March 2006. By 2007, the platform had grown to 10 million users. This rapid growth led the company to open international offices in places like India, Australia, and Ireland.

LinkedIn has undergone major structural changes and massive financial milestones. In May 2011, the company held an initial public offering, or IPO. This is when a company sells shares to the public for the first time. On its first day of trading on the NYSE, shares rose as much as 171%. A massive turning point occurred in December 2016 when Microsoft purchased LinkedIn. The total value of this acquisition was $26.2 billion. At the time, this was the largest acquisition Microsoft had ever made.

Despite its success, the platform has faced significant challenges regarding security and regulation. In 2012, the cryptographic hashes of about 6.4 million users were stolen and published online. Later, in 2016, 117 million usernames and passwords were offered for sale. While some data issues were described as "scraped" data rather than a direct breach, they still caused concern. Furthermore, several countries have placed restrictions on the service. Russia banned LinkedIn in 2016, Kazakhstan in 2021, and China in 2023. Microsoft eventually ended its LinkedIn operations in China in October 2021.

Today, LinkedIn is a massive organization with a complex global presence. As of February 2024, the company employed approximately 18,500 people. It maintains 36 global offices, including a large 26-story building in San Francisco.
