Facebook is a massive social networking service owned by Meta Platforms.

It allows billions of people to connect and communicate across the globe. The service is one of the most visited websites on the internet. As of recent reports, it has approximately 3.07 billion monthly active users worldwide. This massive scale makes it a central part of modern digital life.

To use the service, individuals must first register an account. Users create a personal profile that reveals various pieces of information about themselves.

Once registered, people can connect by sending friend requests. Both users must agree to the connection before they become friends. After this, they can share text, photos, and multimedia content. Users can also join groups based on shared interests, such as a specific hobby.

They can also communicate directly through a tool called Messenger.

Facebook's history began in early 2004 at Harvard College. Mark Zuckerberg founded the site alongside his roommates Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes.

The name comes from "face books," which are student directories containing photos and personal details. Initially, the service was limited only to Harvard students. It later expanded to other North American universities. In 2004, Sean Parker became company president, and the company moved to Palo Alto, California. By 2005, the company purchased the domain Facebook.com and dropped "the" from its name.

The platform has grown through massive financial investments and strategic acquisitions. Peter Thiel provided the first major investment to the company. In 2012, Microsoft purchased a 1.6% share for $240 million. This gave Facebook an implied value of around $15 billion. That same year, Facebook went public in one of the largest initial public offerings in tech history. The company also expanded its reach by purchasing other major services. It acquired Instagram in 2012, followed by WhatsApp and Oculus VR in 2014. In 2021, the parent company rebranded as Meta to focus on the "metaverse."

Technically, Facebook is built using complex software engineering. It was originally developed using PHP, a scripting language used for web development. As the site grew, engineers created the HipHop Virtual Machine (HHVM) to make PHP run more efficiently. The site's primary color is blue because Zuckerberg is red-green colorblind. The system is developed as a monolithic application. This means it compiles into a 1.5 GB binary blob. This large file is then distributed to servers using a custom system based on BitTorrent. This process allows for daily updates with zero downtime for users.

Behind the scenes, Facebook uses advanced data management tools. It uses a platform based on HBase to store data across many different machines. When users perform actions, those events are recorded in log files. A tool called Scribe writes these requests to the logs. Then, an internal tool named Ptail aggregates the data from many stores. This data is sent to different clusters in various data centers. To handle periods of extremely high data flow, the system uses a tool called Puma. This helps manage the heavy load of information moving through the network.

While Facebook provides many tools for connection, it has also faced significant criticism. The company has been scrutinized over user privacy, notably during the Facebook–Cambridge Analytica data scandal in 2018. This event involved the misuse of data to influence elections. There have also been concerns regarding political manipulation and mass surveillance. Other critics point to psychological effects, such as addiction or low self-esteem. The platform has also struggled with content issues like fake news, conspiracy theories, and hate speech.

Despite these challenges, it remains a powerful tool for global movements and communication.
