WeChat is a massive mobile app used by billions of people. It is often called a "super-app" because it does so many different things.

You can use it to chat, play games, or even pay for things. It was created by a company called Tencent. In 2018, it became the largest standalone mobile app in the world. At that time, it had over 1 billion monthly active users. By January 2022, reports said it had more than 1.2 billion users.

The app works in many different ways to help people connect. You can send text messages or use hold-to-talk voice messages. This voice feature works a bit like a walkie-talkie.

The app can also share photos, videos, and even your location. There is even a special sensor feature for voice messages. It can tell when you hold the phone to your ear. This stops your voice from playing out loud for everyone to hear.

WeChat has an interesting history that began with a different app. Tencent already had a popular desktop messenger called QQ.

In October 2010, a project started at the Tencent Guangzhou Research and Project center. A man named Allen Zhang created the original version. He called it "Weixin." Pony Ma, the CEO, gave it that name. The app launched in 2011. At first, growth was slow because some features were missing. Everything changed in May 2011 when they added voice messaging.

There are important differences between the two versions of the app. The Chinese version is called Weixin.

Accounts using Chinese numbers are managed as Weixin. Their data is stored in mainland China. These users must follow rules that allow authorities to track and share activity. The software agreement for Weixin forbids content that might hurt national unity or security. The international version is called WeChat. It has different privacy rules. For example, data for people in the European Union is stored in the Netherlands.

One of the most famous parts of the app is WeChat Pay. This is a digital wallet service that lets you pay for things with your phone.

In 2014, a feature called "red envelopes" became a huge hit. This allowed people to send virtual money to friends for the Chinese New Year. This started a "Red Envelope War" with other companies like Alibaba. By 2013, WeChat Pay was already helping people pay for many services. This made the app a central part of daily life for many people.
