The name Weibo means "microblog" in the Chinese language. It is a place where people go to share news and ideas. Users can upload pictures and videos to show the world. They can also send private messages to their friends. People use the site to find out what is happening right now. It is a very important way for people to connect.

There are many ways to use the site's tools. Users can write short posts to share their thoughts. In 2016, the limit for these posts grew to 2,000 characters. People can use a special symbol called a hashtag to group topics. They use the "@" symbol to talk to specific people. Users can also repost what others have said to their own pages. Some people even use emojis to show how they feel. You can follow others to see their posts in your own timeline.

Sina Corporation created this site on 14 August 2009.

Before this, many other microblogging services existed in China. However, many of those services stopped working over time. Sina saw a chance to build something new and successful. In 2011, the company moved to a new web address. The site became very popular very quickly. By February 2011, the number of registered users passed 100 million. The company even went public on the Nasdaq in 2014.

Weibo has many interesting facts and big numbers.

As of early 2022, there were over 582 million monthly active users. Every single day, users post more than 100 million messages. Many famous people have accounts on the site. The actress Xie Na holds the record for the most followers. To make sure accounts are real, Weibo uses verification symbols. An orange "V" shows a famous person is using the account. A blue "V" shows an organization or company is using it.

Using Weibo is a lot like using other social media apps. It has parts that feel like Twitter or Facebook. It even has parts that work like Instagram for sharing stories. The site has a special list called "trending topics." This list shows what is popular based on what people are talking about. This list can actually change how people see the news. It helps people see what the rest of the world is discussing. It is a window into what is happening in China and beyond.
