This rest is essential for brain performance and overall health. Sleep deprivation happens when you do not get enough sleep. This can be acute, which means it lasts only one or two days. It can also be chronic, which means it happens over a long period of time. This lack of sleep can lead to many different health problems.

When you do not sleep, your body builds up what is called sleep debt. This means the tiredness from staying awake one night carries over to the next day. If you do not get enough sleep for several days, the deficiency builds up. This can cause symptoms to appear more strongly. Sleep deprivation can affect how you feel and how you act. It can lead to high anxiety, irritability, or even erratic behavior. Some people might even experience psychotic episodes when they are very tired.

Scientists have studied how sleep loss affects the brain. One important area is the prefrontal cortex. This part of the brain helps with reasoning and making decisions. Another area is the thalamus, which helps with alertness and attention. Research shows that sleep loss can reduce glucose metabolism in these regions. This is the way the body creates energy for the brain. Studies in 2010 showed that even one night of lost sleep can slow down reaction times. It can also make it harder to use logical reasoning.

Researchers use special tools to see how sleep loss changes the brain. For example, they use a task called the psychomotor vigilance task. This requires a person to press a button when they see a light. If a person is very tired, they might experience microsleeps. These are tiny moments of sleep that happen without a person knowing. These lapses can be dangerous during tasks like driving a car. A study in 2025 found that 24 hours without sleep reduces focus. It also makes it harder for people to switch between different tasks.

Sleep needs change as we grow older. The US National Sleep Foundation recommends that adults aim for 7 hours of sleep. Children and teenagers need much more, ranging from 8 to 16 hours. School-aged children should ideally get between 9 and 11 hours of sleep. Some people also deal with insomnia, which is a sleep disorder. Insomnia can be transient, lasting less than three weeks. It can also be acute or chronic, lasting at least three months. Doctors can sometimes treat this with lifestyle changes or special therapy.
