Sleep deprivation

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sleep deprivation, also known as sleep insufficiency or sleeplessness, is the condition of not having enough sleep to support health and alertness. This state can be either acute or chronic. Acute sleep deprivation happens when a person sleeps less than usual for a short period, typically one to two days. Chronic sleep deprivation occurs when someone routinely sleeps less than what is required for proper functioning. Sleep is essential for neural recovery and maintaining metabolic balance. Nearly one-third of a person's life is spent sleeping.

Sleep needs vary significantly based on age. The US National Sleep Foundation recommends that adults aim for 7 hours of sleep per night. Children and teenagers require even more, ranging from 8 to 16 hours per night. For healthy, school-aged children, the appropriate duration is between 9 and 11 hours. When people do not get enough sleep, they accumulate what is called sleep debt. This is a cumulative buildup of lost sleep. The fatigue from staying awake one night carries over to the next day. If a person misses sleep for several days, the deficiency builds up and symptoms appear more strongly.

Sleep deprivation affects the brain through specific biological mechanisms. It primarily impacts the prefrontal cortex and the thalamus. The prefrontal cortex controls executive functions like reasoning, decision-making, and attention. The thalamus is a structure involved in alertness and attentional control. Research shows that sleep loss can reduce glucose metabolism in these regions. Glucose metabolism is the process the body uses to create energy in the blood. When this energy production decreases, brain activity and function decline.

Cognitive and neurobehavioral effects can appear very quickly. A 2010 study showed that complex cognitive processes decline after just one night of sleep loss. Participants showed slower reaction times and impaired logical reasoning. This happens because of diminished activation in the prefrontal cortex. Other effects include unstable attention, memory decline, and reduced learning ability. A 2025 study found that 24 hours of sleep deprivation causes significant decreases in attentional processing. It also reduces cognitive flexibility, which is the ability to switch between different tasks.

To measure these lapses, researchers often use the psychomotor vigilance task (PVT). In this task, a person must press a button in response to a random light. Failure to react is often caused by microsleeps. These are tiny, involuntary moments of sleep. Interestingly, people often cannot accurately judge their own level of impairment. While totally sleep-deprived people know they are impaired, those with chronic sleep loss often rate themselves as being fine. This can lead to dangerous mistakes in tasks like driving or industrial work.

Biological research also examines the cellular damage caused by sleep loss. Studies on rodents show that REM sleep deprivation can cause damage to neurons. REM is a specific stage of sleep. In rats, deprivation can cause swollen mitochondria, which are the energy-producing parts of cells. In mice, total REM sleep deprivation for two days can cause neuronal death in areas like the hippocampus. While mice are used in studies, they do not perfectly model humans. Humans spend much more time in the REM stage than mice do.

Long-term sleep insufficiency is linked to serious health risks. A meta-analysis in Sleep Medicine Reviews indicates that chronic sleep deprivation increases the risk for obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. It is also linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, and strokes. Beyond physical health, it can cause mood disturbances like high anxiety, irritability, and depression. In some cases, it can even lead to psychotic episodes. However, in a small subset of cases, sleep deprivation has paradoxically been used as a treatment for depression.

Some people experience sleep deprivation due to insomnia. Insomnia is a disorder where people have trouble falling or staying asleep. There are three types: transient, acute, and chronic. Transient insomnia lasts less than three weeks. Acute insomnia is a short-term problem. Chronic insomnia lasts for at least three months and occurs at least three nights per week. Insomnia can be caused by stress, anxiety, genetics, or poor sleep habits. It can often be treated through lifestyle changes or cognitive behavioral therapy.
