Sleep is a special state where your mind and body rest.

During this time, your muscle activity drops and you stop interacting with the world. Even though you are resting, your brain stays very active. It is much more reactive than a coma. Sleep helps your body stay healthy by restoring your immune and nervous systems. It also helps maintain your mood and your memory.

Scientists believe sleep may have started hundreds of millions of years ago. One big reason for it is to let the brain cleanse itself of waste products.

Your sleep works in repeating cycles that last about 90 minutes each.

You move between two main modes called non-REM and REM sleep. Non-REM sleep is the first part of the cycle. It includes deep sleep, also known as slow-wave sleep. During this deep stage, your heart rate and body temperature both fall. Then, you move into REM sleep, which stands for rapid eye movement. This is the stage where you often experience dreams.

In REM sleep, your brain waves become fast and your muscles lose their tone.

Your brain uses different types of waves to show how you are sleeping.

Scientists use a tool called an EEG to measure these waves. Alpha waves happen when you are resting but still awake. Beta waves appear when you are fully alert and concentrating. Theta waves happen as you begin to fall into sleep. Finally, delta waves appear during your deepest stages of sleep. These waves have different speeds and strengths. This helps doctors understand exactly which stage of sleep you are in.

Your body follows a schedule called a circadian clock.

This internal clock uses light to know when it is day or night. A part of your brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus helps run this clock. At night, it tells the pineal gland to release melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that helps regulate your sleep cycle. However, blue light from phone screens or TVs can disrupt this. This light can stop the release of melatonin and make sleeping harder.

Researchers use many tools to study sleep in laboratories. They use polysomnography to collect many different measurements at once. This can include looking at brain waves or eye movements. They can also use an EKG to check your heart activity. Knowing how sleep works helps us manage sleep disorders. These can include things like insomnia or sleep apnea. Staying in rhythm with your internal clock helps you feel your best.
