A dream is a series of images, scenes, and feelings. These events happen in your mind while you sleep. Most dreams last between 5 and 20 minutes. Humans spend more than two hours dreaming every single night.

Dreams can feel very strange or even impossible. Different places and objects might blend together into one. This strange, blending quality is called being phantasmagoric. You might also feel many different emotions during these scenes. In one large study, anxiety was the most common feeling. Other feelings like joy, anger, or fear also appear.

Dreams mostly happen during a stage called REM sleep. REM stands for rapid-eye movement. During this stage, your brain activity is very high. It actually looks much like being awake.

Some scientists think the brain tries to make sense of random signals. They believe the brain's cortex tries to build a story. It takes messy information and turns it into a narrative. This might be why dreams feel like they have a plot. However, we do not know exactly where in the brain dreams start. We also do not know if one place or many regions are involved.

People have wondered about dreams for a very long time. In ancient times, people believed dreams held special truths. The ancient Egyptians thought dreams were ways to hear from gods. They even used special "dream beds" in sanctuaries to get advice.

In the third millennium BCE, the Babylonians practiced dream interpretation. Even earlier, the ancient Sumerians studied them too. One Sumerian king, Gudea, rebuilt a temple because of a dream. He was told to do so by a dream figure. These ancient people often felt they had to follow dream commands.

Science has changed how we look at dreams over the years. The scientific study of dreams is called oneirology. From 1940 to 1985, Calvin S. Hall collected 50,000 dream reports. He worked at Western Reserve University to study them. In 1966, Hall and Robert Van de Castle published a famous book. They used a coding system to study 1,000 reports from students.

This study showed that people from different parts of the world have similar dreams. It also found that negative emotions are more common than positive ones. These studies help us understand how humans experience sleep.

Dreams connect to many things we see in the real world. The images in dreams often come from your own memories. They reflect the people and places you have actually known.

However, the way they appear can be very bizarre. Even the way we use words has changed over time. In Old English, the word "dream" meant noise or music. It was not until the 13th century that it meant sleep thoughts. This change likely came from the Old Norse word "draumr." Learning about dreams helps us learn about our own minds.
