Shutter speed

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A camera uses a part called a shutter. The shutter is like a little door. It opens to let light hit the sensor. The sensor is the part that records the image.

Shutter speed is how long that door stays open. We call short times "fast" shutter speeds. We call long times "slow" shutter speeds.

Fast speeds help freeze motion. You can catch a bird in mid-flight. This makes the subject look very sharp.

Slow speeds let in more light. This helps when it is dark. But slow speeds can make things look blurry.

If you move a subject during a slow shot, it leaves a trail. This is called motion blur. You can even make moving water look like white fog.

If you hold the camera by hand, you might shake. This shake can make the whole photo blurry. To fix this, use a tripod. A tripod is a three-legged stand that keeps the camera still.
