Phase velocity

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Waves move in many ways. One way is called phase velocity. This is the speed of a single wave part. It is the speed of a crest. A crest is the high point of a wave.

Wave group
Wave group

Sometimes waves move in groups. This is called a wave packet. The whole group has its own speed. We call this group velocity.

Wave packet propagation (phase faster than group, nondispersive)
Wave packet propagation (phase faster than group, nondispersive)

In deep water, these two speeds are different. The phase velocity can be much faster. It can be twice the group velocity. This means the wave parts move through the group. They can even move in the opposite direction.

Some materials change how waves move. This is called dispersion. In a dispersive medium, the speed depends on frequency. Frequency is how often a wave repeats. The ratio of light speed to phase velocity is the refractive index. This index helps us find the group velocity. If the index does not change with frequency, the medium is non-dispersive.
