Phase velocity

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Waves move through space.

Wave group
Wave group

A wave has a speed. This is how fast a wave part moves. We call this speed phase speed.

Some waves move in groups.

Wave packet propagation (phase faster than group, nondispersive)
Wave packet propagation (phase faster than group, nondispersive)

A wave part can move fast. The whole group can move slow. This happens in deep water.

In deep water, the parts move fast. The group moves at half that speed. The parts can even move past the group. This is a cool way to see waves work.
