physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Waves move power from one place to another. A mechanical wave needs a material to move through. This material is called a medium.

Waves start when energy is added. The energy moves in the same direction as the wave. The material does not move far. It just shakes or vibrates in place.

There are three main types of these waves. First are transverse waves. In these waves, the parts move up and down. They move at a right angle to the wave.

Second are longitudinal waves. These waves move back and forth. They make parts bunch up or spread out. Sound is a type of longitudinal wave.

Third are surface waves. These move along the top of a medium. Water waves in a pool are surface waves. There are two kinds of surface waves in the ground. Rayleigh waves move like ripples on water. Love waves move side to side. These can happen during an earthquake.
