Mechanical wave

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A mechanical wave is a way that energy moves. It needs a material to travel through. This material is called a medium.

The wave carries energy from one place to another. The material itself does not move very far. It only shakes around its starting spot. This shaking is called an oscillation.

Waves start when energy is added to a medium. The medium must have two special traits. It needs elasticity to snap back. It also needs inertia to keep moving. Once energy is added, the wave travels. It moves in the same direction as the energy. The wave keeps going until all the energy is gone.

There are three main types of these waves. Transverse waves move in a specific way. The particles move up and down. They move at a right angle to the wave's path. Longitudinal waves are different. They move back and forth. These waves create compressions where parts bunch up. They also create rarefactions where parts spread out. Sound is a common longitudinal wave.

Surface waves travel along the top of two different materials. You can see these in a pool or ocean.

There are two kinds of surface waves in the ground. Rayleigh waves move like ripples on water. They are much slower than other waves. They move at about 90% of the speed of a typical medium. Love waves are also surface waves. They move side to side. They usually travel slightly faster than Rayleigh waves.

We see these waves in our daily lives. Seismic waves happen during earthquakes. Rayleigh waves can be very destructive during these events. They lose energy in only two directions. This is different from P-waves or S-waves. Wind waves move across lakes and seas. You can also hear sound waves every day. These waves are part of the world around us.
