Cinematography

arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Cinematography is the art of making moving pictures.

It uses a lens to focus light. This light hits a sensor or special film. This makes a real image inside a camera.

Early makers used strips of film. These strips held many pictures in a row. In 1888, a film called Roundhay Garden Scene was made.

It is the oldest moving film still around.

Many early movies were monochrome. This means they used only one color tone. Most were black and white. This uses shades of gray. Filmmakers use this to show light and shadows. It can make a scene feel very deep or sad.

Later, people wanted color. Some even painted films by hand!

This was done in 1895. Later, new tools made color films easier to make. By the 1960s, color became the main way to make movies.

Today, most people use digital tools. Digital cameras use a sensor to catch light. This turns light into an electrical charge. The images are saved as files on small chips. This makes it easy to show movies to the world.
