Often called the "Queen of Latin Music," she has profoundly influenced the global musical landscape. Her work helped popularize Hispanophone music, which is music sung in Spanish, across the world. This popularity has contributed to increased interest in learning the Spanish language globally. Shakira is also credited with opening international markets for other Latin artists. Her career is defined by a unique ability to blend Western musical styles with Middle Eastern influences.

Shakira's musical journey began with a deep connection to words and rhythm. She wrote her first poem, "La Rosa de Cristal," at age four. By age six, she was using a typewriter to compose lyrics. Her first song, "Gafas Oscuras," was inspired by her father's use of dark glasses to hide his grief. Her interest in dance grew after hearing a doumbek, a traditional Middle Eastern drum, at a local restaurant. She practiced belly dancing at her Catholic school every Friday. These early experiences in Barranquilla, Colombia, formed the foundation of her performance style.

Her professional career started with significant challenges and early milestones. She made her recording debut with Sony Music Colombia at age 14. Her first album, Magia, was released in 1991 but only sold 1,200 copies in Colombia. In 1993, she earned third place at the Viña del Mar International Song Festival in Chile. Her second album, Peligro, also struggled commercially. Despite these setbacks, she continued to develop her craft. By age 15, she had graduated from a convent secondary school. She later noted that her intense focus on music goals meant she missed much of her adolescence.

Shakira achieved massive international success through a series of breakthrough albums. Her third studio album, Pies Descalzos, was released in 1995 and sold over 5 million copies.

This album reached number five on the U.S. Billboard Top Latin Albums chart. In 1998, she released Dónde Están los Ladrones?, which sold over 7 million copies worldwide. Her first English-language release, Laundry Service, arrived in 2001 and sold over 13 million copies. This achievement made it the best-selling album by a female Latin artist. She became the first woman to have number-one albums across four different decades.

Her discography includes many successful Spanish and English releases. Spanish-language albums like Fijación Oral, Vol. 1, Sale el Sol, and El Dorado all topped the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart. Her English albums, including She Wolf and Shakira, achieved platinum status worldwide.

Her ability to cross linguistic boundaries is evidenced by her success in both Spanish and English markets. She has earned 4 Grammy Awards and 15 Latin Grammy Awards throughout her career.

Beyond the recording studio, Shakira has expanded into television and film. She served as a coach on two seasons of the American singing competition The Voice from 2013 to 2014. She also provided voice roles for the animated films Zootopia and Zootopia 2.

Shakira also uses her platform for significant humanitarian and philanthropic work. She established the Barefoot Foundation to support children's needs. She advocates for the rights of women, the Latino minority in North America, and the equitable development of the Global South. In 2011, she received the Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year award. The French government honored her as a Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2012. Her commitment to social causes remains a central part of her public identity.
