Sanz's musical journey began in Madrid during his childhood. He was born on 18 December 1968, to parents from Andalusia. His father was a professional guitar player and a book salesman. This connection inspired Sanz to start playing the guitar at age seven. During summer vacations, he was exposed to traditional flamenco music in southern Spain. He originally wanted to become a professional flamenco performer. However, he found the training to be very difficult. He described the teachers as strict and sometimes cruel to beginners. Because of this, he decided to focus on pop music. He chose to use flamenco as a rhythmic influence rather than a strict lifestyle.

His early recording career involved several different stages and challenges. In 1989, he released his debut album under the name Alejandro Magno. The album, titled *Los Chulos Son Pa' Cuidarlos*, mixed techno with flamenco. It did not find much commercial success at the time. Sanz even took a break from music to study business administration. He also worked in a recording studio writing for other artists. Eventually, he signed with Warner Music Latina and began using his real name. His 1991 album, *Viviendo Deprisa*, helped him build a dedicated fan base in Spain. This was followed by successful records like *Si Tú Me Miras* and *3*.

Sanz achieved massive international stardom with his 1997 album, *Más*. This record featured ballads that combined pop, flamenco, and tropical rhythms. The album was a historic success in Spain. It sold more than two million copies and became the best-selling album in Spanish history. It was even certified 22 times Platinum in his home country. The hit single "Corazón Partío" helped make him a star from Spain to the United States. Following this, he released *El Alma al Aire* in 2000. This album sold over one million copies in its very first week. It earned him four Latin Grammy Awards in 2001.

In 2002, Sanz reached another milestone in his career. He became the first Spanish artist to record an MTV Unplugged album. An "unplugged" album features live musicians playing acoustic instruments. Sanz said this experience helped him rediscover the pure spirit of music. He also engaged in many high-profile musical collaborations. In 2005, he co-wrote and performed "La Tortura" with the singer Shakira. This single reached number one on many global charts.

He also worked with artists like Michael Jackson and Destiny's Child.

Sanz's music has also addressed serious social and political topics. His 2003 album, *No Es lo Mismo*, took a more political approach. One song discussed oil spills on the Spanish coast. Another song, "Labana," told the story of people fleeing Cuba on makeshift rafts. This album won four Latin Grammy Awards in 2004. During this period, Sanz also became the first Spanish musician to lecture at Harvard University. He spoke there about the importance of Hispanic culture. Despite his success, he faced personal challenges in 2007. A period of high stress led him to take a two-month break from touring to focus on his health.

In the later years of his career, Sanz continued to evolve. He signed with Universal Music Group in 2011. He released the album *La Música No Se Toca* in 2012. His 2009 release, *Paraíso Express*, was noted as a return to his melodic roots. This album had a more rhythmic and positive spirit compared to his earlier experiments. He even started a YouTube campaign where fans shared their own definitions of paradise. Sanz remains a significant figure in the world of Latin music. His ability to blend diverse genres continues to connect different cultures through song.
