Growing up in East Harlem, also called El Barrio, Anthony learned to sing in Spanish and English. He was the youngest of eight children. As a child, he listened to many genres. These included rock, rhythm and blues, and pop. He was specifically influenced by salsa legends like Héctor Lavoe and Rubén Blades. The percussionist Tito Puente also had a profound professional influence on him.

Before becoming a salsa star, Anthony worked in the underground New York music scene. He started as a session vocalist for freestyle music and house music. He also worked as a songwriter and backing vocalist for the pop group Menudo. In 1988, he released his first album, a freestyle record titled "Rebel." He spent the early 1990s collaborating with producers like Little Louie Vega and Todd Terry. In 1992, he even opened for Tito Puente at Madison Square Garden. His style at this time borrowed heavily from African American urban genres. This unique blend helped shape his early musical identity.

His transition to salsa was sparked by a single moment of inspiration. Anthony was initially reluctant to record salsa music. However, while riding in a taxi, he heard the song "Hasta Que Te Conocí" by Juan Gabriel. This song inspired him to ask RMM Records president Ralph Mercado to let him record salsa. He released his first Spanish-language album, "Otra Nota," in 1993. This album included a cover of the song "Make It with You" by the band Bread. This move established him as a major new star in the salsa genre. He soon began touring throughout the Americas.

Anthony's career is marked by several record-breaking achievements. He holds a Guinness World Record for being the best-selling tropical or salsa artist. He also holds the record for the most number-one albums on the Billboard Tropical Albums year-end charts. On the Billboard Latin Tropical Airplay chart, he has achieved 32 number-one songs. His 1995 album, "Todo a su tiempo," became a gold record in the United States and Puerto Rico. It sold more than 800,000 copies and earned a Grammy nomination. His 1999 English-language album, "Marc Anthony," was certified triple platinum.
