His early life involved many different interests before his music career took flight. Born on January 19, 1964, in Jocotenango, Guatemala, he grew up mostly in Guatemala City. Before finding music success, he studied architecture and engineering at the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala. He eventually graduated from the School of Communication Sciences instead. He also worked as a teacher at a primary school called Santa Elena III. During this time, he coached basketball for the Instituto Don Bosco in 1988.

Arjona's musical journey began at age 21 with the label Discos de Centroamérica, S.A. His first album, "Déjame Decir Que Te Amo," released in 1985, did not chart successfully. The label tried to present him as a stereotypical Latin lover. Because of this commercial failure, Arjona actually left music to teach school. He returned to music at age 24 to represent Guatemala in the 1988 OTI Festival. This decision led to the song "S.O.S Rescátame" and his second album, "Jesús, Verbo No Sustantivo." This second album brought him significant commercial and critical success across the United States and Latin America.

In the 1990s, Arjona achieved international fame through several different channels. He appeared in the Mexican telenovela, or soap opera, "Alcanzar una Estrella." This role helped him become a known singer throughout Latin America. In 1993, he released the album "Animal Nocturno." This album contained hits like "Mujeres" and "Primera Vez." It was a massive success, earning thirteen platinum and one diamond certification. The album sold 500,000 copies in 1994 alone.

Arjona's career reached new heights with his fifth studio album, "Historias." This album sold 2 million copies throughout Latin America. It received twenty-seven platinum and two diamond certifications. In Argentina, the album achieved quadruple Platinum status. His sixth album, "Si El Norte Fuera El Sur," released in 1996, marked a shift in his themes. He began exploring sociopolitical topics like nationalism and globalization. This album was named the Rock Album of the Year by Billboard in 1997.

His tenth album, "Vivo," was a live recording made in 1998. He performed this for over 100,000 people at the Hippodrome of Guatemala City.

His work often connects to broader global discussions and cultural movements. For example, his album "Galería Caribe" showed his deep love for Caribbean culture. This album peaked at number one on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart. Some of his songs have also sparked intense debate. The song "Mesías" caused a controversy involving the FBI. People noted connections between the lyrics and the September 11 attacks. The song describes a character with a sinister plan for the world. Arjona later clarified that the song had no relationship to those attacks.
