Guerra is recognized for his ability to blend traditional Caribbean rhythms with many other genres. He is especially credited with helping to popularize bachata music on a global level. His music often features a unique blend of sounds that makes it instantly recognizable.

Guerra's musical foundation began with rigorous academic study. He first studied Philosophy and Literature at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo. He later moved to the Dominican Republic's Conservatorio Nacional de Música to study guitar and music theory. To further his training, he traveled to the United States to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He graduated from Berklee in 1982 with a diploma in jazz composition. This formal education allowed him to bring complex musical concepts to his later work. Upon returning home, he formed a band with local musicians from his community.

The mechanics of his musical evolution involved shifting between different genres and business opportunities. In the early 1980s, his music was heavily based on jazz tunes learned at Berklee. His first album, Soplando, was released in 1984 with his band, Juan Luis Guerra y 440. The name "440" refers to the standard musical tuning of A440. A major change occurred in 1983 after a performance for entrepreneur Bienvenido Rodríguez. This performance led to Guerra being signed to Karen Records. This signing caused a radical shift in his style toward merengue music. By 1988, he became the dominant vocalist for the band during the recording of Ojalá Que Llueva Café.

Guerra's discography includes many distinct styles and stages of development. His early work focused on jazz and merengue, but he later explored much more. He incorporates rhythms such as bachata, bolero, salsa, cumbia, mambo, and cha-cha-cha. He also uses pop, rock and roll, reggae, classical, R&B, jazz, funk, soul, and hip-hop. His style of bachata is unique because it mixes traditional bolero rhythms with bossa-nova influenced melodies. In 1994, his album Fogaraté focused on rural Dominican music like Perico Ripiao. Later, in 2004, his album Para Tí focused primarily on Christian music. This album was three times certified platinum by the RIAA, selling 300,000 copies.

The history of his success is marked by numerous prestigious awards and massive sales. He has won 31 Latin Grammy Awards and three Grammy Awards. In 2007, he swept the Latin Grammy Awards, winning in every category for which he was nominated. This included Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year. His 1990 album, Bachata Rosa, was a major milestone with over five million sales. This album earned him his first Grammy Award and allowed him to tour Europe and the United States. He has also been honored as a BMI Icon and received a lifetime achievement award at the Premio Lo Nuestro.

Beyond music, Guerra has used his platform for significant social and philanthropic impact. In 2005, he received the Spirit of Hope Award for his philanthropic work. In 2008, UNESCO named him an Artist for Peace. This title recognized his efforts to benefit children with disabilities and children in need. He also participated in the Paz Sin Fronteras concert in 2008. This event celebrated the end of a diplomatic crisis between Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador. These actions show how his influence extends into humanitarian efforts and international diplomacy.

Guerra's work also demonstrates a deep connection to diverse languages and cultures. He has recorded songs in English, Portuguese, and even used Japanese words in his hit "Bachata en Fukuoka." He has even used the Arawak language of the extinct Taíno people in his music. Recently, he expanded his creativity into the world of filmmaking. In 2024, he produced the animated film Captain Avispa, directed by his son, Jean Gabriel. The film was a success, attracting 150,485 viewers to theaters. This move into film shows his continued desire to explore new ways of storytelling.
