He is celebrated for his immense versatility and vocal range. Throughout his long career, he has performed 151 different roles. He is capable of singing in many languages, including Italian, French, German, Spanish, English, and Russian. This skill allows him to perform in the most prestigious opera houses globally. Beyond the opera stage, he has also achieved success as a crossover artist in Latin and popular music.

His musical foundation began with his family's zarzuela company. Zarzuela is a traditional form of Spanish opera. His parents, Pepita Embil and Plácido Domingo Ferrer, were both singers.

Growing up in this environment, Domingo showed early musical talent. His mother noted he could hum complex music after hearing it once. In 1949, his family moved from Madrid, Spain, to Mexico. There, he studied piano at the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City. He also attended conducting classes and studied voice under Carlo Morelli. Interestingly, his conservatory classes provided all of his formal vocal instruction.

Domingo's professional career evolved through several distinct vocal stages. For much of his career, he was a lirico-spinto tenor. This is a type of tenor voice that can handle more dramatic music. He was highly popular for roles such as Cavaradossi, Hoffmann, Don José, and Canio. He eventually moved into even more dramatic roles. He became one of the most acclaimed performers of the opera Otello. In the early 2010s, he transitioned again into baritone parts. A baritone is a voice type lower than a tenor. In this stage, he performed roles such as Simon Boccanegra.

His rise to international fame involved many significant milestones. He made his professional debut at age sixteen, playing piano in Mérida, Yucatán. In 1959, he auditioned for the Mexico National Opera at the Palacio de Bellas Artes. He was accepted as a tenor comprimario. A comprimario is a singer who performs small or secondary roles. His official operatic debut occurred in the role of Borsa in Verdi's Rigoletto. By 1961, he was singing leading roles like Alfredo in La traviata. He soon expanded his reach to the United States with the Dallas Civic Opera.

Domingo holds several impressive records in the classical music world. He has opened the season at the Metropolitan Opera in New York 21 times. This is more than any other singer, surpassing Enrico Caruso's record by four. He has also earned fourteen Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards. His success extends to recorded media, with several records achieving gold and platinum status. In 1990, he joined Luciano Pavarotti and José Carreras to form The Three Tenors. Their first recording became the best-selling classical album of all time. It has sold more than 10 million units worldwide.

His impact on popular culture is also quite notable. In 1981, he released his first pop album, titled Perhaps Love. The title song was a duet with country singer John Denver. That single song has sold almost four million copies. This success helped him appear on many television programs. He also starred in several opera movies directed by Franco Zeffirelli. These films were released in cinemas and on television. This allowed his performances to reach audiences far beyond the opera house.

Today, Domingo's influence continues through leadership and mentorship. He served as the general director of the Los Angeles Opera from 2003 to 2019. He also led the Washington National Opera from 1996 to 2011. Beyond administration, he is involved in humanitarian works. He also supports the next generation of musicians. He started and runs an international singing competition called Operalia. This competition helps young singers find success on the global stage.
