He is known for his amazing skill and his ability to sing many different types of music. Throughout his long career, he has performed over 150 different roles on stage. He is very versatile and can sing in many languages. These include Italian, French, German, Spanish, English, and even Russian. People love his work because he brings so much passion to every performance. He has even found success in popular music outside of the opera world.

His musical journey began with many different steps. As a young boy, he learned to play the piano very well. He later studied at the National Conservatory of Music in Mexico City. There, he took classes to learn how to lead music, which is called conducting. He also studied how to use his voice. Interestingly, he did not have a private singing teacher. Instead, he learned everything he needed to know through his conservatory classes. He started his professional career at age sixteen by playing the piano for his mother.

Plácido was born in Madrid, Spain, on January 21, 1941.

His parents were both singers who ran a zarzuela company. Zarzuela is a special kind of Spanish opera. When he was eight years old, his family moved to Mexico. In Mexico, he won a singing contest for boys. He even performed in small roles with his parents' company. By the time he was twenty-one, he was making his big operatic debut. He sang a small part in an opera called Rigoletto at the Palacio de Bellas Artes.

In 1990, he joined two other famous singers named Luciano Pavarotti and José Carreras. They formed a group called The Three Tenors. Their first recording became the best-selling classical album of all time. It sold more than 10 million units around the world.

He also helps new musicians through a competition he started called Operalia. This contest helps young singers show their talents to the world. Many people recognize him from his many opera movies and television appearances. He even sang a famous song called "Perhaps Love" with John Denver. This helped him become a star in popular music, too. His life shows how much hard work and variety can lead to great success.
